Early Warning Signs of a Tornado
Tornadoes can develop quickly, but nature often gives warning signs before one forms. Recognizing these signals and preparing ahead of time can save lives.
⚠️ Early Warning Signs of a Tornado
1. Dark, Greenish Sky
Severe thunderstorms that produce tornadoes often cause the sky to take on a green or yellow tint, especially in the afternoon or early evening.
2. Large, Dark, Rotating Clouds
Look for a low-hanging rotating cloud, often called a wall cloud. This may appear beneath a larger thunderstorm.
3. Loud Roaring Sound
Many survivors describe the sound of an approaching tornado as similar to a freight train or jet engine.
4. Large Hail or Sudden Calm
Tornado-producing storms frequently drop large hail before a tornado forms. Sometimes winds suddenly go eerily calm just beforehand.
5. Debris Falling From the Sky
If you see branches, leaves, or debris being lifted or falling, a tornado may already be forming nearby.
6. Funnel Cloud
A visible spinning funnel extending downward from the cloud base is a clear sign a tornado could touch the ground at any moment.
📡 Official Alerts to Watch For
- Tornado Watch: Conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Stay alert and ready.
- Tornado Warning: A tornado has been spotted or detected by radar. Take shelter immediately.
🛠️ How to Prepare Before a Tornado
1. Identify a Safe Shelter
- Basement or storm cellar (best option)
- Interior room on the lowest floor
- Away from windows (bathroom, closet, hallway)
2. Build a Tornado Emergency Kit
Include:
- Flashlight & batteries
- Weather radio or phone alerts
- Bottled water & snacks
- First-aid kit
- Whistle to signal rescuers
- Phone chargers / power bank
- Important documents in waterproof bag
3. Secure Your Home
- Trim trees and remove loose outdoor objects
- Reinforce garage doors if possible
- Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
4. Have a Family Plan
Everyone should know:
- Where the safe room is
- How to contact each other if separated
- Where to meet after the storm
🚨 What to Do When a Tornado Warning is Issued
- Go immediately to your shelter area
- Protect your head with a helmet, mattress, or heavy blankets
- Stay away from windows and doors
- If outside with no shelter, lie flat in a low ditch and cover your head (avoid bridges/overpasses)
✅ Important Tip:
Many injuries occur from flying debris, not the wind itself. Head protection dramatically reduces risk.
