Wonder about the history of Easter Egg Hunts

With Easter this weekend, communities are celebrating not only with church services but with Easter Egg Hunts.  Ever wonder when they began and why?

Beginning in Germany, it was customary to celebrate Spring.  Children believed that the Easter hare laid eggs in the grass.  To make things more interesting for children, the eggs were placed into hard-to-reach places among nettles or thorns.

Some historians suggest that egg hunts trace back to German Protestant reformer Martin Luther who organized egg hunts for his congregation.  He used this symbolism to represent the story of Christ’s resurrection from the tomb and Jesus’ new life.

Happy Easter!
